Where Our Used Railway Sleepers Come From

Our sleepers are recovered from UK rail lines as track is decommissioned or replaced, then inspected and graded at our yard before going on sale.

Each old sleeper has typically spent decades in service, which is why no two look the same; the staining, bolt holes and surface wear are all part of its working history.

What Can Reclaimed Sleepers Be Used For?

Old railway sleepers work well anywhere you want a rustic, lived-in look: retaining walls, garden edging and borders, steps and landscaping features. Their natural variation in colour and wear also makes them a popular choice for statement pieces, where the character of the timber is part of the design rather than something to be smoothed away.

Planning raised beds or planters for growing food? Speak to our team before you buy and we’ll recommend the right stock for the job.

Why Choose Second-Hand Sleepers Over New?

  • Genuine character and weathering that can’t be replicated in new timber
  • A more sustainable choice, giving working timber a second life
  • Often more cost-effective than new oak or hardwood equivalents
  • Ideal for matching existing reclaimed features in a garden

Sizes & Specification

Our used sleepers typically come in standard 2.4m lengths, with common cross-sections including 250x125mm and 200x100mm. As every piece is genuine ex-rail timber, exact dimensions can vary slightly from sleeper to sleeper.

Call our team on 01782 334 532 if you need closely matched sizes for a specific project.

Common FAQs

Are old railway sleepers safe to use in gardens?
Many ex-railway sleepers were treated with creosote during their working life, so they aren’t suited to every use. They’re ideal for retaining walls, edging and landscaping, but shouldn’t be used where there’s frequent skin contact or for growing food. Ask our team and we’ll point you to the right stock.

What’s the difference between Grade A and Grade B reclaimed sleepers?
Grade A sleepers have a more consistent, uniform appearance, while Grade B sleepers are more heavily weathered, ideal if you want a well-aged, rustic look.

Why do used sleepers vary in size and condition?
Because they’re genuine ex-railway timber rather than manufactured to a uniform spec, each batch differs slightly in wear, colour and exact dimensions, which is part of their appeal for rustic projects.

What’s the difference between old, used and reclaimed railway sleepers?
The terms are interchangeable. Old, used, second-hand and reclaimed railway sleepers all refer to genuine sleepers removed from working rail lines and made available for garden and landscaping use.

Can you cut sleepers to size?
Yes. Our sleeper cutting service means you get the exact length you need. Add it on the product listing or contact us to discuss your project.

Can I collect from your yard?
Yes. You’re welcome to visit and collect from Grove Road Industrial Estate, Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent, ST4 4LG. We recommend calling ahead to confirm stock.
