Sleepers are one of the most versatile materials for garden and landscaping work. Common uses include raised beds and vegetable planters, garden borders and edging, retaining walls, steps, and outdoor furniture. Their weight and solid timber construction make them easy to build with, requiring no specialist tools for most garden applications.
For a sleepers garden project, the main decision is usually new versus older, and full versus half length, both covered below.
If you’d prefer the clean, consistent finish of new timber, or the weathered character of used sleepers, we stock both. Browse our reclaimed railway sleepers range for ex-railway oak and softwood.
Full length sleepers, typically 2.4m, suit larger structures such as retaining walls or longer raised beds. Half railway sleepers, cut to around 1.2m, are a popular choice where a lower profile or more compact build is needed, such as garden steps, smaller borders, or tight spaces where a full sleeper would be unwieldy.
Both are available in new and used stock, and we also offer a sleeper cutting service if you need a custom length.
Based in Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent, we supply sleepers for sale to trade and public customers across Staffordshire, including Newcastle-under-Lyme, Crewe, and Leek, with collection from our yard or fast nationwide delivery.
Please note: special offers and promotional pricing are available for deliveries within a 30 mile radius of our yard only.
What sizes do railway sleepers come in?
We stock a range of sizes, including full 2.4m lengths and half sleepers in 1.2m and 1.3m lengths. Common cross-sections include 200x100mm, 240x120mm, and 250x125mm. Check individual product listings for current availability.
What are half railway sleepers used for?
Half railway sleepers are popular for raised beds, low retaining walls, garden edging, steps, and any project where a full 2.4m sleeper would be too large or difficult to handle. They’re lighter, easier to work with, and often more economical for smaller garden projects.
Can I collect railway sleepers from your yard?
Yes. You’re welcome to visit and collect from our yard at Grove Road Industrial Estate, Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent, ST4 4LG. We recommend calling ahead to confirm stock.
Do you offer a cutting service for sleepers?
Yes. We offer a sleeper cutting service so you can get the exact length you need without any tools or mess. Select the cutting service from the product listings or contact us to discuss your requirements.
Do you sell railway sleepers in bulk or for trade?
Absolutely. We supply trade and bulk orders regularly and can offer competitive pricing on larger quantities. Contact us to discuss your project.
How many sleepers do I need for a raised bed?
For a bed roughly 2.4m by 1.2m and two sleepers high, you need four full 2.4m sleepers for the long sides and four half 1.2m sleepers for the ends. The inside will be slightly smaller because the ends sit within the long sides. Use our cutting service if you need exact lengths.
