Paving Stones: Reclaimed Cobbles & Granite Setts

Our granite setts and cobbles are reclaimed from old streets, yards and mills, then sorted at our Stoke-on-Trent yard. Granite is one of the hardest paving stones available, so setts that have already carried traffic for a century will happily take a driveway’s worth more.

Choose setts for driveways and courtyards where you need a strong, regular surface, or rounded cobbles for borders, edging and traditional details. Use our cobbles and setts calculator to work out how much you need.

How To Lay Granite Setts

Granite setts last longest when they sit on a solid, well-drained base. As a general guide:

  1. Dig out and compact the ground, allowing for the depth of the setts plus the base.
  2. Lay a compacted sub-base of MOT Type 1, typically around 100mm for paths and patios and 150mm or more for driveways.
  3. Bed the setts on a mortar mix of sharp sand and cement, tapping each one level.
  4. Leave joints of around 10mm and point them with mortar once the bed has set.

For driveways carrying vehicles, we recommend using an experienced installer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are reclaimed cobbles and setts?
A: Reclaimed cobbles and setts are original stone paving blocks salvaged from older streets, buildings, and construction sites. These materials are cleaned and repurposed for new landscaping projects, offering an authentic, timeworn aesthetic that modern alternatives can’t replicate.

Q: What’s the difference between cobbles and setts?
A: While often used interchangeably, cobbles are typically rounded stones (often naturally weathered), whereas setts are quarried and cut to a more uniform rectangular or square shape, often from granite or sandstone. Both are extremely durable and ideal for paving.

Q: Why choose reclaimed over new cobbles?
A: Reclaimed cobbles and setts offer:

✔️ A unique aged appearance
✔️ Greater sustainability (reuse of existing materials)
✔️ Durability, having already stood the test of time
✔️ A rich sense of character and heritage

They’re ideal for period restorations, traditional landscapes, and eco-conscious projects.

Q: Are reclaimed setts suitable for driveways?
A: Absolutely. Granite setts, in particular, are extremely hard-wearing and capable of handling heavy loads. When properly laid, they provide a robust, attractive surface for driveways, courtyards, and access roads.

Q: How many granite setts do I need per square metre?
A: With 10mm joints, 100 x 100mm setts need about 83 per square metre, and 200 x 100mm setts about 43. Add 5 to 10 percent for cuts, or use our cobbles and setts online calculator.

Q: Are reclaimed granite setts good for driveways?
A: Yes. Granite is extremely hard and frost resistant, and reclaimed setts have already proven themselves under traffic. Lay them on a deep compacted sub-base with a mortar bed.

Q: Do you deliver reclaimed cobbles and setts across the UK?
A: Yes, Gardiners Reclaims offers nationwide delivery across the UK. We pack and ship reclaimed materials securely and efficiently, with delivery options suited to both residential and commercial projects.

Q: Can I view the cobbles before purchasing?
A: Yes! If you’d like to see our reclaimed cobbles and setts in person, you’re welcome to visit our yard. Alternatively, we can provide photos, videos, and expert advice remotely to help you make the right choice.

Q: What’s the difference between paving stones, cobbles and setts?
A: Paving stones is the umbrella term for individual stone paving units. Cobbles are rounded, naturally weathered stones, while setts are quarried and cut to a more regular rectangular shape. Setts are usually the practical choice for driveways; cobbles suit decorative borders and traditional courtyards.
