New oak has never been treated, so it’s the safer choice for vegetable beds and children’s play areas. Reclaimed oak brings decades of character that new timber can’t copy, and gives good hardwood a second life.

What Can You Build with Oak Sleepers?

Raised beds and planters. Two sleepers high gives a comfortable working height for vegetables and herbs.

Retaining walls. Oak’s weight and density make it well suited to holding back soil on sloping gardens.

Garden steps. Lay sleepers as risers and back-fill with gravel or soil for simple, sturdy steps.

Borders and edging. Define lawns, paths and beds with a clean, solid edge.

Benches and seating. A single sleeper on two short uprights makes a robust outdoor bench.

Caring for Oak Sleepers

Oak needs no treatment to last outdoors. Left alone, it weathers from honey brown to a soft silver-grey. If you’d like to keep the original colour, apply a clear oak or decking oil once a year.

New oak naturally moves and develops small surface splits (called checks) as it dries. This is normal and doesn’t affect strength. Oak also releases tannins when wet, which can stain light paving and react with plain steel, so use stainless steel or galvanised fixings.

FAQs About Oak Sleepers

Q: Are oak sleepers better than softwood sleepers?
A: Oak is denser and more naturally durable than softwood, so it generally lasts longer in the ground and looks more premium. Softwood sleepers are lighter and cheaper, which suits larger projects on a tighter budget.

Q: How long do oak sleepers last?
A: Solid oak sleepers typically last for decades outdoors. Lifespan depends on drainage and ground contact, so lay them on a free-draining base such as gravel where you can.

Q: Do oak sleepers need treating?
A: No. Oak is naturally durable and can be left untreated. An annual coat of clear oil will slow the change to silver-grey if you prefer the original colour.

Q: Are oak sleepers safe for vegetable beds?
A: New oak sleepers are untreated, so they’re a good choice for growing food. Reclaimed oak railway sleepers may have been treated during their working life; ask us and we’ll advise on the most suitable stock.

Q: Why is my new oak sleeper cracking?
A: Small surface splits are a natural part of new oak drying out. They’re cosmetic and don’t weaken the sleeper.

Q: Can you cut oak sleepers to size?
A: Yes. Our sleeper cutting service cuts any sleeper to the length you need, so it arrives ready to build with.

Q: Do you sell oak sleepers in bulk?
A: Yes. We supply landscapers and trade customers regularly. Call 01782 334 532 for bulk prices.
